two word problems please help!?
1. In 8 minutes, a conveyor belt can move 1,000 bushels of corn into a storage bin. A smaller belt can move 1,000 bushels to the storage bin in 11 minutes. If both belts are used, how long will it take to move 1,000 bushels to the storage bin?
2. Sally can clean the house in 5 hours, her father can clean the house in 4 hours, and her younger brother, Dennis, can completely mess up the house in 7 hours playing. If Sally and her father clean and Dennis plays, how long will it take to clean the house?
8 x 60 = 480 seconds .. 1000 / 480 seconds == 2.083…. bushels per second on large conveyor
11 x 60 = 660 seconds 1000 / 660 seconds == 1.515 bushels per second on small conveyor
combined they move 3.598 bushels per second onto the conveyor
1000/3.5984848 == 277.895 seconds
277.895/ 60 == 4 min 38 seconds
sally cleans house in 5 hours or 20% per hour (1/5)
dad cleans house in 4 hours or 25% per hour (1/4)
dennis mess up house in 7 hours or – 14% per hour (1/7)
sally + dad == clean at 45% of house per hour
minus what dennis messes up 14.3% per hour
leaves a net gain of 30.7% per hour of house cleaned
100% of house / 30.7% == 3.25 hours to clean house.
3.25 hours == 3 hours 15 min
